About us

Well known for the breeding and rearing of Pedigree Welsh Pigs, the Swans have chosen a pig sculpture for their part in the Flintshire Trail. The family introduced the pigs in around 2012 because they struggled to get a reliable supply of pork for their farm shop. The animals are reared slowly and traditionally, for welfare and superb flavour, and customers tell them that their pork ‘tastes like pork used to’, full of flavour, with a lovely colour and the perfect level of fat.
The pigs live outdoors in family groups during the spring and summer months, where they can explore, root, and wallow in mud, which is essential for temperature regulation and the health of their skin. When the inclement winter weather arrives, they are moved inside to a spacious shed, ensuring that they stay warm and comfortable. At any one time, the farm typically houses around 150 pigs, including 2 boars, 8 sows, and their offspring. Some of the older pigs can often be spotted roaming the fields near the farm shop.
Visitors can learn more about life at Swans Farm by following a scenic trail around the fields. Besides offering stunning views, the trail allows visitors to see grazing animals, farmers at their work, various crops, and some amazing local wildlife. Dogs are welcome, though they must be kept on a lead at all times, and wearing wellies is advised, as some areas can get muddy. Maps are available at the farm shop, located at the start of the trail.
Swans Farm Shop’s choice of a pig sculpture for the Flintshire Trail perfectly reflects the family’s deep connection to the land, and their commitment to upholding time-honoured farming methods. The sculpture also invites visitors to explore and appreciate life on the farm, and to experience first-hand the connection between quality food production and responsible farming.
