Hawarden Castle
The handsome village of Hawarden boasts not one, but two, castles. Hawarden Old Castle (Castell Penarlâg), on the site of an earlier motte and bailey fortification, is a medieval Grade 1 listed building which is open to the public for just a few days each year. The later castle (Castell Penarlâg Newydd) is also Grade 1 listed and was once home to four-times British Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, having previously belonged to the family of his wife, Catherine Glynne.
